Work With Me

My Solution

If you’re in pain, you need more than just symptom relief, you need a gentle solution that helps you release long-held patterns of stress and pain at the source. This is where my treatment approach, incorporating craniosacral therapy, can help. Craniosacral therapy is a gentle, profound treatment which uses very light touch to encourage the release of stresses throughout the body, tapping into your body’s innate ability to balance, restore and heal itself. It is often found to be helpful where there has been a poor response to other, more  conventional, treatment modalities.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Craniosacral Therapy work?

Every day, your body endures stresses and strains, and your structures work to compensate for this. Unfortunately, these stresses often cause body tissues to tighten and distort the craniosacral system, which can then cause tension to form around the brain and spinal cord. The result is a barrier to the healthy performance of the central nervous system, and potentially every other system it interacts with. Craniosacral therapy involves detecting and releasing any restrictions in the tissues influencing the craniosacral system and therefore, by normalizing the environment around the brain and spinal cord, craniosacral therapy is able to alleviate a wide variety of problems, including:

  • Migraines and Headaches
  • Chronic Neck  and Back Pain
  • Depression
  • Stress and Anxiety
  • Colic
  • Shoulder Pain
  • Knee Pain
What is a Craniosacral Therapy session like?

A typical cranioSacral therapy session lasts from 45 minutes to an hour, and takes place in a relaxed, private setting.  You remain fully clothed throughout the treatment.  What you experience during a craniosacral therapy session is highly individual.  You may experience deep relaxation, insights, releases or a sense of peace.  Some people even fall asleep. At the end of your session, I will answer any questions you may have about what you experienced or what to expect after the treatment. You are welcome to make another appointment at that time, or you may want to wait to see how your sense of well-being improves before rescheduling. There is never a long-term commitment or pressure to schedule more appointments.

How will I feel after a Craniosacral Therapy session?

Just as each individual experiences craniosacral therapy sessions differently, the results can be diverse as well.  You may leave in such a relaxed state that you feel like sleeping for hours, or you may leave full of boundless energy.  You may feel a decrease in pain or an increase in function immediately after the session, or the effects may develop gradually over the next few days.  Because craniosacral therapy helps the body resume its natural healing processes, it’s common for your improvements to continue weeks after the session.

How many treatment sessions will I need?

Each individual response to treatment is unique and therefore the number of sessions needed to resolve any particular condition varies widely.  Your response is uniquely your own and can’t be compared to anyone else’s — even those cases that may appear to be similar to your own.

There is never a long-term commitment or pressure to schedule more appointments.

Six year history of back pain relieved in one treatment.

The week after returning from my first Craniosacral Therapy course, I was dropping my daughter off at school and I noticed one of the other mums (Mrs T*) bent over in obvious pain. As I was walking back to my car, I got talking to Mrs T and asked her how she was. She said she had excruciating back pain, which she’d had on and off for the past six years. She’d been referred to an osteopath, but there was a two week waiting list. I told Mrs T that I’d just come back from a course and I needed to practice the techniques I’d learned. I asked her if she’d allow me to ‘practice’ craniosacral therapy, explaining that if it didn’t help her back, it would be helping me.  Mrs T agreed to try the treatment.

The following day, Mrs T came to my practice. She was in so much pain, she almost couldn’t get onto the treatment plinth. Eventually she managed and I started my treatment protocol. Mid-way through the protocol, Mrs T announced that her back pain had gone. I finished my treatment protocol and at the end of the treatment, Mrs T did, indeed, get off the plinth pain free. We both looked at each other in amazement. “What just happened there?” I thought to myself. “How could such a gentle treatment approach have such a profound result?”. From then on, Mrs T and I both grinned at each other when we met at the school gate. ‘My back’s still fine.’ she’d say. This was the start of my Craniosacral Therapy journey – my traditional views of how to treat pain were turned upside-down. There was no turning back.

The 'ear pull' technique saves the day.

I was sitting watching my daughter undergo her infant school hearing test, feeling quite relaxed. My daughter was sitting upright, looking alert, wearing a set of earphones and holding a blue brick in her hand. The nurse instructed her to tap on the table with the brick when she heard a sound through the earphones. The test was progressing routinely, my daughter was tapping on the desk with the brick when she heard a sound, but then she stopped responding. I was looking at my daughter, expecting her to tap the desk with the brick, but she didn’t. My relaxed state turned to one of concern. At the end of the test the nurse confirmed my concerns, telling me that my daughter was unable to hear through her right ear and that she would refer her to an audiologist for further assessment.

My daughter received her audiology appointment and we went to the local infirmary where further tests confirmed the nurse’s initial assessment. My daughter was given an appointment to come back in two weeks time for further tests and to discuss possible interventions to resolve the problem. I really dreaded the thought of my daughter undergoing medical intervention at such a young age and then I remembered about a technique I’d been taught on my Craniosacral Therapy course called the ‘ear pull’. We’d been told this may help with ear problems in children so I decided to try this treatment technique. My biggest challenge in administering the treatment was getting my daughter to lie still long enough for me to ‘pull her ears’. Thankfully I managed. At the next audiology appointment, my daughter’s hearing on re-testing was normal. She was discharged from treatment with no medical intervention required. Coincidentally, my daughter’s reading significantly improved.  Did the ‘ear pull’ technique help? I have no way of knowing. However, I was very relieved that my daughter’s hearing was back to normal and that no intrusive medical intervention was required.

Low back pain relieved in one treatment.

Mr B* was a 32 year old builder who presented to me with severe back pain.  He was referred to me by a friend of a friend, who was a nurse. During the initial consultation I informed Mr B that I no longer used traditional physiotherapy techniques per se in my treatment approach i.e. I would not be using electrotherapy, mobilisations or manipulation, which he may have been expecting if he’d had physiotherapy in the past.  Instead, I’d be using a gentle hands-on treatment approach (craniosacral therapy) to release the tension and restrictions in his body. Mr B was happy with this approach and I started my treatment protocol. At the end of the treatment, I asked Mr B to call me to make another appointment if/when required.

Weeks went by.  I hadn’t heard from Mr B and I was resigning myself to the fact that I’d probably never know if the treatment had been successful or not.  Then about a year later, Mr B called. He told me he’d just started to get a few twinges in his back again and would like to make another appointment. Furthermore, he was now also urging his wife to make an appointment as she had back pain too and he felt that this treatment approach might help her.
