Qualifications

Degree, courses & anecdotes

Here is a list of my qualifications and major career chapters in my therapeutic work, along with some anecdotes of how my career has developed and evolved from a traditional physiotherapy background to a more holistic  approach.

My Career Evolution

BSc in Physiotherapy

Queen Margaret University,
Edinburgh,
Scotland

1987-1990

“On leaving school, I worked as a bank officer in the Clydesdale Bank, Stirling.  Although I was very good at my job, and was given the opportunity of promotion and a move to London, my heart wasn’t in banking. Therefore, after seven years of working in the bank, I plucked up the courage to give up my safe banking job and follow my passion to become a physiotherapist.”

Acupuncture

Basic Acupuncture Course  1995
Manchester

Advanced and Auricular Acupuncture 1996
Manchester

Transcutaneous Acupuncture April 2016
Dr Norm Shealy

‘A friend, John, had bought a hand-held acupuncture machine and he asked me for my advice on the product.  I had never used acupuncture in my clinical work and so I asked John if I could borrow the machine to try it out.  I was working in a GP practice at the time and I asked one of my chronic back pain patients if I could try using the acupuncture machine on him.  He agreed.  It resolved his back pain in one treatment. I was amazed and intrigued. I wanted to find out more about acupuncture and so I went on an acupuncture course’.

Nutrition

Healthexcel’s Metabolic Typing 2004

Metabolic Typing Intermediate Level Advisor (MTILA)

www.healthexcel.com

“I’d been feeling very unwell.  I was feeling tired and lethargic, I had a bloated stomach, I was struggling to eat meals and I was losing weight. I was beginning to think there was something seriously wrong with me. I went to my GP, but his attitude made me feel worse rather than better. I left his surgery feeling very helpless and frustrated. Coincidentally, at work, the office cleaner, May, asked for my advice on a diet she wanted to go on.  She had a book that she left for me to read. The book was called ‘Food Combining for Healthby Doris Grant. Whilst reading the book I thought  to myself ‘This is why I’m feeling the way I’m feeling’.  I returned the book to May, giving it my seal of approval and informed her that I’d bought my own copy and was going to go on the ‘diet’ myself. My health improved rapidly. Within two weeks I felt like a new woman. I was amazed and saw at first hand the importance and effect of what I ate on my health.

I later took Healthexcel’s Metabolic Typing Course, and became a metabolic typing advisor. This involves providing a customised diet and supplements to suit the unique body chemistry and requirements of the individual. The purpose of the metabolic typing programs is to balance body chemistry and maximise metabolic efficiency by addressing metabolic individuality i.e. to meet one’s genetically-based requirements for nutritional, biochemical individuality.

Orthotics

TOG Orthotics
Gait Scan owner

2002

www.togorthotics.com

‘I was a good, recreational golfer, but felt/knew I could play even better if only my body would stop ‘going out of alignment’ at crucial times during my round of golf. I attended a Fitness for Golf seminar at The Belfry and as part of the seminar, all attendees were given a pair of top-of-the-range custom made orthotics. The chiropractor promoting the orthotics claimed this would solve my ‘body going out of alignment’ problem. I was so impressed with the technology and the concept that I bought a Gait Scan to use in my practice. I wore the orthotics, thinking this was the answer to my problems, but it wasn’t. When playing golf, my body still ‘went out’ at crucial times. I sold the Gait Scan and stopped wearing the orthotics due to the inconsistent results I was getting’.

Craniosacral Therapy

Upledger Institute

Perth, Scotland

CST 1 2004
CST 2 2005
SER 1 2007
CST for Paediatrics 2009

‘The orthotics didn’t work. My body still ‘went out of alignment’ when playing golf at crucial times. I was very frustrated.  This was supposed to be the answer to my golfing woes.   Whilst on holiday in Florida, I read a book ‘The Malalignment Syndrome – Implications for Medicine and Sport’ by Wolf Schamberger. It recommended, among many other things, Craniosacral Therapy. I’d vaguely heard of Craniosacral Therapy – I’d noticed courses advertised in Frontline, the monthly magazine for physiotherapists, and so on my return from holiday, I went on my first Craniosacral Therapy course. My traditional model of how to treat pain was turned upside down’.

Visceral Manipulation

Barral Institute,
Ayr, Scotland

Visceral Manipulation 1 2009 – Ayr Scotland
Manual Articular Lower Extremity 2012 – Ayr Scotland
Visceral Manipulation V – 2017 Dublin Ireland

‘Whilst on one of my Craniosacral Therapy courses, a friend suggested I might be interested in Visceral Manipulation. Visceral manipulation explores the connections between our organs, emotions, trauma and pain and how recognising and interpreting the signals sent to us by our organs can bring us greater health and well-being.  This treatment method ties in with my philosophy of treating the cause, not the symptoms’.

Cell Salts 2019
Gemstone Essences 2020

‘My essential oils journey began in 2014 when I was looking to find a suitable essential oil blend to diffuse in my treatment room. Little did I know that four years later this idea would evolve into me preparing my own custom therapeutic blends. I initially dipped my toes into the world of essential oils by becoming a distributor with Young Living, a MLM (multi-level marketing) company. In order to learn more about the products and get a feel for the company, I attended Young Living’s 20th Anniversary conference in Salt Lake City, Utah in June 2014. However I did not feel comfortable with the ethos of the company when attending the conference and stopped using YLEO as my source for essential oils. I then stumbled across Dr Bruce Berkowsky, a retired naturopath and homeopath, whose Spiritual Phytoessencing approach to essential oils really resonated with me. I have been training with Dr Berkowsky since 2015, earning the credential of R.SPE.P  in 2018and now incorporate deep-acting custom essential oil and flower essence blends into my therapeutic work.’
